The gameplay revolves around the linking of four or more similar object in any random pattern. The objects to be linked together fall from the top of the playfield in rotatable 2x2 sets to land on either the bottom or on other already placed objects in the playfield.
X-Mess also boosts a handdrawn introduction sequence, hiscore list, MIDI soundtracks, samples and 3D generated animations.
